Covering a period of 150 years, this true story illustrates a change in the culture from the early twentieth-century to today’s modern life.
My grandfather had a bad name among the family from the 1900s, and later he seemed to have been considered merely a bit of a maverick. His son, my father, saw very little of his father after the age of 16, and had a hidden yearning most of his life to find out what had happened to him. I eventually discovered my grandfather, and information that was important, but it was too late for my father to know.
My father had a most interesting life and is the main character in this story. The twists and turns of his early life bring to light changes in the world in almost every aspect. For Dad and later for us, his life was an extraordinary ‘hands on’ education. There were experiences of national and international conflicts, exploration, differing cultures, upheavals, and life changes in at least three generations. I felt his story was a story that needed to be told, not only to our existing family, but to a wider audience.
I feel I’ve had a lucky life and especially benefitted from my investigation of those two men.
