My Life Based in the Marlborough Sounds
It all started with a road trip in 1974 for three brothers exploring the South Island of New Zealand. When their house-truck breaks down near Havelock, the gateway to the Sounds, they think their journey is over. But really, it has just begun…
Join Marty, Paul and Steve as they explore deeper and deeper into the enchanting labyrinth of the Sounds, gathering friends off the road, searching for a place to call home.
The locals call them “the hippies” and cultures soon clash in this enclave of fishermen and farmers. Drug bust and betrayal, shipwreck and survival, are all part of the journey, as are the friendships made and lessons learnt.
This account of ‘commune’ lifestyle in the 70’s is candid and personal, hilarious and poignant. It is also a chronicle of love and marriage, heartache and loss, of spirituality and self-discovery. It spans most of a life-time and takes us away to distant places too, in its flow of insights and stories; but down deep, right at its heart, are the towering mountains and blue-green seas of the Sounds.
And its people.
